Steps To Take Immediately After Your Louisville Divorce is Final

Important Steps To Take Immediately After Your Louisville Divorce is Final

You need to create a list of steps to take immediately after your Louisville divorce is final.  It is important to note, the temporary restraining orders issued by the Court contain specific instructions about your fiduciary duties during the divorce.  However, once the Judge in your case has issued the final divorce decree in your case it is in your best interests to immediately do the following:

The first of the important steps to take immediately after your Louisville divorce is final is to review any shared account you had with your former spouse.  You may be surprised to learn your ex made a financial transaction without your knowledge.  If so, notify your divorce and family law attorney at Dodd & Dodd as soon as possible.

Immediately notify all previously joint bank(s) and credit card providers which were determined to be marital property and notify them of your change in marital status.

The next thing on your check list is to immediately change the status of the beneficiary on every retirement asset, trust,  will and/or life insurance policy.

Ask your employer for a W-4 and update your tax withholding status.  This should be accomplished within 10 days of your divorce being finalized.  You will also need to file an IRS form 8822 (change of address) if you have moved.  You may also need to provide your new address to your child(ren)’s school(s), the DMV, the post office and even the Social Security Administration.  Your list should also include any other previous jointly held service providers such as cell phone, internet or TV providers or utility companies where you and your ex were both responsible for paying the bill.

In an ideal world the some or all of the steps to take immediately after your Louisville divorce is final might be taken concurrently with your former spouse.  There may be occasions where a provider requires both of your signatures and if you are coordinating it will make the process more efficient.
