The William E. Barth Foundation was established as a charitable, non-operating, private foundation through the generosity of Mrs. Louise Barth Laffan and Mrs. Dorothy Barth Jockell. The foundation was established in honor of Mrs. Laffan’s and Mrs. Jockell’s brother, William E. Barth. Mrs. Laffan and Mrs. Jockell taught in the Jefferson County School System. Throughout their life, they exemplified a strong interest in the welfare of children. Mrs. Dorothy Barth Jockell taught home economics at Eastern Junior High (now Breckinridge Elementary) located on Broadway in Louisville. Mrs. Louise Barth Laffan taught history at Atherton High School for approximately 35 years.
Mrs. Laffan died on February 27, 1993. The Foundation was first funded in 1994. Distributions to local charities were made initially from the Foundation for the calendar year 1994 in the year of 1995. The grants are restricted to Louisville and Jefferson County and are given for local charitable purposes. In 1995, the Foundation distributed $17,500 to 12 different charities. In 2010, the Foundation distributed $186,500 to numerous charitable organizations. Total grants approved annually, have heretofore, regularly exceeded five percent (5%) of the total portfolio value. A list of charitable organizations assisted by the William E. Barth Foundation in 2024 is listed below. As a result of a smaller endowment, grants in 2024 were limited and were paid based on grant applications received the prior year (2023).
Dodd & Dodd Attorneys was established in 1869 and has represented the donors’ family for an estimated 50 years. While the donors considered fulfilling their charitable intent through the Louisville Community Foundation, as a private decision, they elected to utilize their attorney. Allen P. Dodd, III is the President of the William E. Barth Foundation and Elizabeth Dodd, the Secretary. The members of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation consist of Allen P. Dodd III, Mrs. Mary Sachs and Elizabeth Dodd. Applications for grant requests may be directed to Allen P. Dodd, III at 12004 LaGrange Road, Louisville, KY 40223.
