Issues of Concern in a Louisville Gray Divorce

Issues of Concern in a Louisville Gray Divorce - Family Law

What are the primary issues of concern in a Louisville gray divorce? One of the first substantial studies to focus on this issue was “The Gray Divorce Revolution: Rising Divorce among Middle-aged and Older Adults” by Susan L. Brown of Bowling Green State University.  An updated Bowling Green State University study in 2021 found gray divorce rates had tripled in the 30 years covered by the study (1090 – 2021). A recent Evergreen State University (Olympia, Washington) paper noted: “If you are a healthy 65, you can expect pretty good health for the next 20 years. Once the kids are gone, it is much easier for (these) parents to move on from a bad relationship, or even one that has gone stale.

Here at Dodd & Dodd Attorneys, PLLC, we have also observed a substantial increase in the number of these cases recently.  However, the issues of concern in a gray divorce can be quite different than many other divorces here in Louisville, and throughout Jefferson County and the surrounding communities. While some gray divorce cases involve a relatively short marriage, most represent a union of 15 to 20 years or longer.

When a marriage lasting longer than 10 to 15 years ends in a Kentucky divorce, concerns often focus upon spousal support or maintenance, the ownership of a business or professional practice, and/or the division and management of pension and retirement accounts, not to mention the impact of taxation upon many of these important decisions. There is often much more at stake for each party in a gray divorce, and this is why it is important to work with the experienced and proven divorce and family law attorneys at Dodd & Dodd.
