What are some of the leading causes of divorce in Louisville? Is there a “final straw” or is it usually more of an accumulation over time? Now that things are starting to re-open and life is beginning to look a little more like normal we are all taking stock of where things stand and what we want to differently going forward.
If you are reading this, you may be feeling like your marriage can’t be saved. You might have fallen out of love. Things might have simply gone past the point of no return in your heart. Here in Kentucky, we presume the cause of any divorce is “the marriage is irretrievably broken.” You are not alone in how you are feeling, and you may be wondering what are some of the leading causes of divorce in Louisville.
It may or may not surprise you to learn that the majority of divorces in Kentucky are filed by women. Two of the most common reasons women listed in a recent study by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers were an inequitable distribution of responsibilities, household duties and childcare within the marriage as well as a loss of physical and emotional intimacy. The parties are viewed by society as a married pair and yet individually feel like they are alone and living separate a separate life from their partner.
One of the most common issues mentioned by men and women alike was a lack of communication. In some cases, the relationship had deteriorated to the point where it wasn’t even worth fighting about anymore. In others, the parties were never able to openly share and talk through issues and problems and resolve them.
Unfortunately, some of the leading causes of divorce in Louisville include physical or emotional abuse. This reason was listed in almost 25% of the cases involved in the study. In many of those cases, the issues centered on domestic violence and/or addiction or abuse to alcohol or other substances.
Financial stress and the inability to work together to resolve financial issues was another leading issue listed by survey respondents. Infidelity is often present or has been a recent issue in many cases, but those who expounded upon the infidelity often tied it to one or more of the issues listed above.
While these are some of the leading causes of divorce in Louisville your recent experiences of marriage and child-rearing during the pandemic may have exposed irreparable concerns associated with your marriage. While it is important to ultimately understand the “why” and work through issues in counseling to resolve them in your own life, the issue before you may be more of a “how?” How do you start the process of a divorce and what do you need to know as you prepare?
